Orion podcast, Bonnie Jo Campbell's Retro Renovation | Belle Boggs

I thought I?d post a link to Orion?s podcast for the March/April issue. Here?s a summary of what you?ll hear: ?Orion?editors Jennifer Sahn, Andrew Blechman, and Hannah Fries discuss the March/April 2012 issue of?Orion, including the first of a two-part essay by James Gustave Speth about the disappearing American Dream and how things have gotten so bad in Washington; Belle Boggs?s poignant memoir about infertility; Amy Leach?s delightfully whimsical essay about panda bears; Steven Kotler?s humorous investigation into ecopsychology; poetry in the issue; and an introduction to a very unusual project (?Take a Closer Listen?) creatively displayed in this issue of?Orion.?

Click here to listen, or here to read my essay and join the discussion.

Also, if you follow Orion on Twitter, you might have learned that the planet?Mars will be bright in the east tonight?the brightest this year. (I?m not on Twitter, but sometimes I browse around to follow VCU basketball or see what Richard is up to.)

And speaking of, inspired by my post about our yard, Richard sent me this link to a story about Bonnie Jo Campbell?s ?swamp house? kitchen renovation (on the blog Retro Renovation), which she waited 24 years to tackle. In the accompanying interview, she talks about the importance of living modestly if you want to write:

I always tell my students that if they are serious about writing that they should live in a very modest house and try to keep expenses low so that they don?t have to work themselves too hard to pay the mortgage. They think I?m kidding, but I?m not. It?s very hard to make time to write in any case, and so if there?s a way to spend less time earning a living, then follow that way. I also am honest when I say that my poor housekeeping is part of the plan.? I can have a clean, well-kept house or I can get books written, not both.

I asked my creative writing students, who all want careers as artists, if they were willing to live frugally, even to be poor. They all said ?yes!? very eagerly. I actually believe them; it?s hard to picture any of them growing up to become investment bankers, or even regular bankers. I did not encourage them to neglect their chores, though.

Here comes the $48 computer | Learn Computer Programming

The $48 Raspberry Pi computer's debut has caused online retail sites to crash. Photo / Jared Smith

It?s a computer that costs $48, which makers hope will
get every child programming ? and the initial run of 10,000 has
been snapped up by eager customers.

While it may not look as attractive as its more expensive
cousins, the credit-card-sized Raspberry Pi was launched last
week in the UK to much fanfare, and will be coming to New
Zealand on the next run.

Equipped with two USB ports and an ethernet port to access
the internet, it is capable of running word processing,
internet, games, and high-definition video ? the same
capabilities as PCs costing 10 times its price.

The charity that developed the PC hopes it will make basic
computers available to anyone, particularly in schools, and
generate interest in computer programming among children.

Technology experts predict that charitable organisations are
likely to bulk import them into New Zealand for community
programmes and schools.

UK demand for the computer was so overwhelming that its
developers said it sold out in minutes and crashed one of the
supplier?s websites.

Technology commentator Peter Griffin stressed that the
computer would have basic functionality ? ?It?s no iPad? -
but its size and cost created the possibility of a computer
for every child.?There will be no excuse for a kid not to
have a computer.

?They can put it in their pocket, carry it to school. It?s
equivalent to what you?d get in an Android smartphone but it
costs a fraction of the price.

?Not only does it give kids tools to learn all their
subjects, but to also start thinking like software developers
themselves so they can pump their ideas out to the world. In
the next few years we?ll see kids writing their own Android
and Apple apps.?

Mr Griffin said the product?s value was in its bare-bones
system, which allowed it to be shipped cheaply and plugged
into old, existing technology.

The Raspberry Pi?s scale and cheapness were made possible by
huge leaps in memory storage in a small space and also a
microchip _ similar to those in smartphones _ which has
significant processing power.

A new batch of the Raspberry Pi is expected in four to six
weeks, and an even lighter version is expected to be on the
market soon. With only one USB port and no ethernet port, it
will sell for $30. Some similarly sized, stripped-down
computers are already on the market, but the Pi undercuts
them on price.

The computer is available here through the nz.element14.com
website.

Computer Clubhouse NZ chief executive Mike Usmar, whose
company encourages learning by technology, said the product
was attractive because it was designed collaboratively _ by
the industry, teachers, academics and the public.

?That?s quite critical because technology shouldn?t just be a
demarcation between the industry and users. It is not
dropping computers out of a helicopter into developing
nations _ it is about engaging with people and working
collaboratively.?

United-Continental computer hiccups affect some fliers

By Joe Myxter, travel editor

UPDATED 12:15 p.m. PT: Customers of United Airlines?saw improved?service on Sunday?as the airline?worked through technology glitches during its combination of the United and Continental Airlines reservation systems.

On Saturday, United?adopted the reservation platform of the former Continental Airlines after the companies merged to form the world's largest airline, now known as United Airlines and owned by United Continental Holdings.

But after spending months preparing for the change ? including training about 15,000 employees on the new software ? United said on Sunday that technical issues had flared up at airports across the system, causing delays.

In particular, problems with the company's airport check-in kiosks meant customers had instead to line up to see service agents, spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said.

"We did have some issues with our kiosks and at times that slowed the check-in process," McCarthy said, adding that the airline's performance had improved by Sunday morning as the company installed upgrades to the kiosks.

About 75.5 percent of United's mainline flights were on time ? arriving within 14 minutes of their scheduled slot ? on Sunday morning, as were about 87.1 percent of its Express flights, according to McCarthy. "Employees are working hard to take care of our customers," she said.

Original story: In a final step of its merger, United-Continental on Saturday performed a massive procedure consolidating two IT systems into one, a process called a ?cutover.? The transition?has gone relatively smoothly, though some fliers have been affected by missed connections and late departures and arrivals.

Some travelers reported about their experiences on Twitter:

  • ?Getting an upgrade on #United has never seemed less convenient or more expensive than it does now. Congratulations guys!,? tweeted @rogermud.
  • ?Flying on #United or #Continental today? Arrive early as they?ve completely bungled the debut of their new check-in system. #mergerfail,? wrote @owasow.
  • ?#United rolled out their new website today and it takes significantly longer to load,? @deanwampler tweeted.
  • ?If you?re flying #United/#Continental today & have the option to check in curbside, do it! Reading horror stories but curbside was a breeze,? said @ericschmoldt.

In an e-mail to msnbc.com, United Airlines spokesperson Rahsaan Johnson said one system is now supporting the carrier. "The system conversion involves moving millions of reservations and re-establishing numerous communications links. The vast majority of this work is going well, and we are resolving technical issues that we are identifying during this process," he said.

?As a letter grade, I give them a B-,? said Joe Brancatelli, frequent flier and publisher of business-travel newsletter JoeSentMe. Most problems, he said, have been reported at pre-merger United hubs such as Dulles International in Washington and O'Hare International in Chicago. Former Continental hubs, he observed, have not had as many problems.

As for the delays at Dulles and O'Hare, Johnson said the airline is working "to speed up airport kiosks, which at times have slowed check-in," but added "most of our flights have either departed on time or within 30 minutes of the scheduled departure time.

As of 5 p.m. ET, United's on-time percentage for departures out of O'Hare was at 16 percent, according to Flightstats.com. Out of 83 tracked departures, one was canceled, 28 were delayed between 15 and 30 minutes, 20 delayed between 30 and 45 minutes and 21 were delayed more than 45 minutes. By comparison, American Airlines' on-time percentage out of O'Hare was 85 percent.

?Barring an absolute meltdown, the electronic side has gone as well as expected,? Brancatelli told msnbc.com. ?In fairness, I don?t see the gigantic problems we?ve seen with other cutovers.?

Recent history is littered with cutovers that didn?t go quite as planned. Perhaps the most infamous snafu took place in 2007 when US Airways tried to integrate the systems of merger partner America West. The result? Out-of-order kiosks, long lines, flight delays and lots of inconvenienced and angry customers.

More recently, Virgin America and?Cathay Pacific?have suffered IT-migration meltdowns that impacted travelers? ability to manage reservations, access mileage plan accounts or talk to a reservation agent.

As for United's cutover, ?people haven?t lost a seat or not been upgraded, but it?s not running as smoothly as it should,? Brancatelli said, adding that problems will be fixed in the days ahead, but said the issue today is moving people through the system.

Continental's last flight, 1267, departed from Phoenix at 11:59 p.m. PST on Friday and arrived on-time in Cleveland as United 1267 on Saturday morning.

The airline will stop using Continental's "CO" code. That means no more Continental Airlines tickets, or flights ? even though the Continental name is still painted on some planes.

If you?re traveling today, Brancatelli urges carrying on your luggage if you can, printing out everything, leaving for the airport early and allowing plenty of time, and if you?re not flying over the next few days, staying off United.com.

?Don?t obsess that all the miles you?ve rode haven?t caught up. They will. Today is about people traveling now,? he said.

United and Continental have gone to great lengths to lay the groundwork for a successful transition. Earlier this week, United's Johnson said the carriers?conducted four dress rehearsals, successfully migrating the data from United?s Apollo-based system to Continental?s SHARES-based one.

?As in any dress rehearsal, we figured out potential issues that might arise, fixed them and developed procedures in case they arise again,? he said.

The last flight will mark the completion of the takeover of Continental by United. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Entrepreneurialism: Research Vs. Intuition | Article Museum

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Within the improvement of an enterprise there?s a specific amount of research that should be conducted. Most entrepreneurs find themselves immersed in some form of research whether they like it or not.

For many burgeoning entrepreneurs there is a question of whether or not intense analysis or personal instinct is the very best course of action in figuring out the course wanted in business decisions.

Henry Ford once said, ?Thinking is the toughest work there is. Which is the probable cause why so few have interaction in it.? Even the pioneering automaker knew that research was a taxing and labor intensive course of that was not essentially enjoyable.

?If we knew what it was we have been doing, it could not be called research, wouldn?t it?? ? Writer Unknown

There?s a certain studying curve that comes with making a groundbreaking new business, and it?s analysis that moves us to a degree of understanding. Ceilia Green once quipped, ?The best way to do research is to attack the details at the point of greatest astonishment.?

It?s often the imaginative and prescient realized via research that permits entrepreneurs to go past speculation to risk and reward.

Nonetheless, if there?s a battle it might be between the usefulness of research or instinct in business development scenarios. Albert Einstein as soon as wrote, ?The one real beneficial thing is intuition.? Albert Einstein was a genius, but he placed an excessive value on intuition.

Dr. Joyce Brothers understood a dynamic that many miss when she wrote, ?Trust your hunches. They?re usually based mostly on facts filed away just below the aware level.?

It might be potential that the very act of research permits our instinct to somehow work by way of all of the intangibles so that instinct can take over. I would suggest that it isn?t a matter of whether or not analysis or intuition is more vital, but how the two processes work together.

?Intuition turns into increasingly valuable within the new info society exactly as a result of there may be a lot data.? ? John Naisbitt

It is the very moment when research and intuition meet that they real enthusiasm typically starts for entrepreneurs. The 2 are in the end allies within the strategy of understanding, but far too typically individuals over analyze the analysis info with out permitting instinct the liberty to grasp what it somehow knows with out having the ability to articulate.

The event of vision usually occurs when the known meets the unknown and one way or the other understands they?re compatible. The development of a majority of companies occurred when research met instinct and found they weren?t enemies.

Ten Signs You're in an Abusive Relationship (with your government ...

Creepy Uncle SamWhen you think of an abusive relationship, what adjectives come to mind? Controlling? Violent? Humiliating? Jealous? Obsessive? Go figure, it doesn?t take a huge stretch of the imagination to apply these same adjectives to many of the world?s governments throughout history and certainly the absolute states that emerged in modernity with their absolute warfare, constant surveillance, and obsessive control of every aspect of their citizens? lives from cradle to grave? the federal government of the fifty American states being no exception to this unfortunate state of affairs.

To explore this idea a little further, I took a look at a list of warning signs of abuse, to see if our relationship with our government truly is analogous to an abusive relationship with a romantic partner. Spoiler alert: it is. The list was prefaced thusly: ?The following questions ask you about your relationship. If you are not currently in a relationship, these are signs or ?red flags? to assist people in identifying a potentially abusive person.? Here are just ten of these questions:

?

1. Do you feel nervous around your partner?

Be honest ? even if you?re a perfectly law-abiding citizen, do you feel nervous around police officers? Even when you?re driving the speed limit and obeying traffic laws in a car for which you have a valid license, deed, and registration, do you feel nervous when a police car is driving behind you or pulls up next to you on a city road or freeway? Do you feel nervous when you?re going through TSA checkpoints at the airport even though you have no prohibited items in your baggage and have no intention of doing anything disruptive, violent, or illegal? Have you ever wondered?whyyou should feel that way when you ?have nothing to hide? as the police say?

2. Do you feel pressured by your partner when it comes to sex?

I don?t know, let?s ask a gay or lesbian couple: Do you feel pressured by your government when it comes to sex? Like you?re not really free to express your sexuality, romance, or intimacy in the way that you?d like if it falls outside the narrow expectations of your government? That the government uses laws to punish and discourage you from making your own sexual choices? Would consenting, adult sex workers ? excepting Nevada ? say they feel pressured by the government when it comes to their personal sexual choices? Do you feel pressured by your government when you travel through airports to let its agents touch your body even if it makes you uncomfortable or violates intimate areas of your body? Would most Americans say our government plays too little, or too much of a role in regulating and attempting to influence and pressure the personal sexual mores of consenting adults?

3. Are you scared of disagreeing with your partner?

I wonder if Tea Party protesters find it a little scary to disagree with their government when the government comes out and labels them as potential terrorists for expressing their political disagreements ? both officially in DHS memos to state police departments like the ones leaked in 2009 by WikiLeaks, and unofficially like when several Democratic members of Congress and Vice President Joe Biden himself called Tea Party protesters terrorists during a meeting on the debt ceiling negotiations last year. I wonder if Occupy Wall Street protesters find it a little scary to disagree with their government when it sends in armed riot police to hit them with chemical weapons, rubber bullets, and flash grenades for expressing their disagreement.

4. Is your partner always checking up on you or questioning you about what you do without your partner?

Is your government always checking up on you or questioning you about what you do? With the growing use of surveillance cameras and other technologies, the passage of laws like the Patriot Act that allow the government to do so arbitrarily with impunity, and the never-ending sea of forms from the IRS, to the U.S. Census Bureau, to a dozen other alphabet soup agencies based in Washington, not to mention those that come from state and local government agencies? I?d say the government is clearly?always?checking up on us and questioning us about what we do.

5. Does your partner tell you that if?you?changed, he or she wouldn?t treat you like this?

You don?t have to worry if you don?t have anything to hide, right? It couldn?t be that the law you might be hiding from might be flawed, could it? Couldn?t be that the government needs to stay out of your business, could it? No, it?s definitely your fault. If only?you?stopped smoking cannabis and used government-approved (and of course-?taxed) drugs like caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and any of a number of big pharmaceutical industry drugs? then the government would stop treating you like a criminal and locking you up in an overcrowded prison without access to proper health care or a nutritious diet, and where violent rape is an accepted part of the culture. It?s all your fault.

6. Does your partner?s jealousy stop you from seeing friends or family?

Does the government stop us from seeing friends or family? Might try asking that question to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, who are clearly weary of their multiple tours of duty there as evidenced by the tragically record levels of PTSD and suicide among our active duty military, not to mention the fact that FEC records show that active duty military members have contributed more to the one presidential candidate most vocal about bringing them home than they have to any of the other candidates in either of the two major parties?combined. I bet a lot of them feel like their government?s keeping them from seeing their friends and family. I also wonder if the disproportionate number of black men who are incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses feel like the government is keeping them from seeing their friends and family. I also wonder about the working class spouse and parent who labors through an ungodly number of hours of work each week just to have enough left over to subsist after paying all the government?s taxes, fines, fees, and compliance costs. I wonder if they really thought about it, if that person, who had to miss another soccer game, or come home late for a romantic dinner, feels like they don?t get to see friends and family as much as they?d like because they?re working too hard to pay off all the obligations their government imposes on them.

7. Does your partner make you feel like you are wrong, stupid, crazy, or inadequate?

At this point, I?m just repeating myself. Does the government make you feel wrong when you go through TSA checkpoints? Like you?re a criminal or something just because you want to fly on a plane? Does the government make you feel stupid with its presumed aura of decision-making superiority and its bloated technocracy that makes decisions for you about your own money like they can do a better job than you could? Does the government make you feel crazy when they call your anti-tax or anti-Wall Street protest group radical, fringe, extremist, or even terrorist ? all because you think taxes are too high or that banks shouldn?t receive government bailouts? Does the government make you feel inadequate when it purports to take care of your needs from cradle to grave with a massive and ever-growing welfare state?

8. Has your partner ever scared you with violence or threatening behavior?

Let?s see. Has the government ever scared us with violence or threatening behavior? No! Couldn?t be! The government would?never?do anything violent or threatening. Except for those drones it?s now commissioning to fly over our civilian skies and patrol us. That?s pretty threatening. Or what about the violent police actions at Occupy protests throughout the nation, including the one in Oakland where an officer aimed a tear gas canister at a protester?s head, landing him in the emergency room with severe head trauma? Then there?s the continued militarization of our police who are now serving drug warrants at an alarming rate with full swat teams that bust down doors, shoot dogs, handcuff peaceful citizens, take away their children, and then lock them in a cage because they had a plant in their possession that the government doesn?t approve of. Then there?s the war gaming state police departments have been doing in major U.S. cities in conjunction with the Department of Defense. This is all just in the last year. We could go back to the very beginning of our federal government and talk about all the threatening, violent behavior with slaves, American Indian tribes, and even anti-tax protesters like the Whiskey Rebellion.

9. Does your partner say, ?I will kill myself if you break up with me? or ?I will hurt/kill you if you break up with me??

I?m going to say seceding from a government is pretty analogous to breaking up with a romantic partner. So throughout the history of this government, if anyone attempts secession or argues that secession might be the best thing for everybody, has the Washington regime responded by saying: ?I will hurt/kill you if you secede from me?? Ask?Tom Woods.

10. Does your partner make excuses for the abusive behavior?

No way. There?s no way politicians make excuses. Oh wait ? they do?all the time. Your civil liberties are being violated and the law is being completely ignored and broken? Well that?s just temporary, and it?s only because we?re unsafe right now due to the threat of terrorism, and national security must take precedence for now, but when it?s all over we?ll go right back to the way things were before. We promise. *grin* Oh, it?s ten years later and things are just worse? Well it takes a lot of time to make positive changes, and my administration didn?t create all these problems, we inherited them, and you?re just trying to score partisan points, and ? oh look!?I killed Bin Laden! U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A! ? what were we talking about again?

Conclusion

Yeah, we?re in an abusive relationship with our government. The problem with abusive relationships is that it?s hard for the person in them to see that they?re in one. They make excuses for their abuser. They believe that their abuser really loves them and has their best interests at heart. They think a real change is always just around the corner, and the abuser takes advantage of this by perpetually promising to make changes and get better, promises that are never kept ? the abuse just keeps going on and getting worse. Of course the first step is acknowledging that there?s a problem, that we?re in an abusive relationship with our government, and while a lot of Americans are starting to reach that point, it seems we?re not yet at a critical mass. We need to keep spreading the message and helping the people in this country to see just how abusive, violent, controlling, and malicious their government is.

Thanks for helping us spread the message.
