Superbowl Sunday Food: Prosciutto Pepper Puffs - Tv Food and Drink

Here?s a simple twist on the recipe for crab puffs I posted a while back to accomodate those heathens who dislike crab. There were more of them out there then I originally realized ? my mother and father being two of them ? so out with the crustacea and in with a hot and zesty one-two punch of prosciutto and serrano pepper that?ll keep these babies flying into your mouth faster than you can keep count. And being as light and mouth-watering as they are, you won?t want to keep count.

Serrano is Spanish for ?from the mountains.? The peppers were reportedly first cultivated in the mountain regions of Puebla and Hidalgo, Mexico. They are generally the hottest peppers commonly found in U.S. grocery stores, and are 5 to 10 times hotter than jalapenos. Their thin skin and meatiness makes pre-prep nearly non-existent. I simply mince a few up and toss them into everything ? tacos, tuna salads, ground beef, chicken, sandwiches, eggs and pizza toppings. They?re bountiful and inexpensive, but if you?re not a fan of chile pepper heat, just omit them from the recipe. The prosciutto itself brings more than enough flavor to satisfy just about anyone.

  • 1 cup water
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 5 eggs
  • 3/4 finely chopped prosciutto or fully cooked ham
  • 2 serrano peppers, minced
  • 1/4 cup minced chives

In a large saucepan, bring the water, butter and pepper to a boil. ?Add in the flour ALL AT ONCE and CONTINUE TO STIR until it begins to come together into a sticky substance with a ?Play-Doh? consistency. Remove from the heat and let stand for about five minutes

Add eggs, one at a time, blending well after each addition. ?Continue beating until the mixture becomes smooth and shiny. ?Stir in the prosciutto, serrano peppers and chives. Mix thoroughly.

Lay out on greased baking sheets in heaping teaspoons. ?Cook for approximately 19-22 minutes, but check frequently, and once they turn golden brown, remove them. ?Let cool for about 5 minutes, then serve warm. ?Refrigerate leftovers and re-heat at 350 for about 10 minutes ?(though they go down almost as well cold, trust me).

You've Started A Business: Is Your Brand ... - Small Business Trends

Nothing represents your company and brand more than your business name. It?s the cornerstone of your business and shapes everything that follows ? from marketing tone to a customer?s first impressions.

trademark symbol

Have you protected this valuable asset? How well do you understand trademark law? Maybe you?re just starting your business. Maybe you?ve been running a successful business for years, but administrative details always seem to take a back seat to day-to-day operations. When it comes to your business name and trademark protection, a few proactive steps can go a long way toward protecting your business name, brand and identity.

I?ve registered with the state?isn?t that enough??

Many new business owners often think that registering with their state (by incorporating or filing a DBA) is enough to protect them. Yet there is an important distinction. When you incorporate, form an LLC, or file a DBA (Doing Business As), this process registers your business name with that state?s secretary of state. Once approved, the business name is yours and yours alone to use within that state. It prevents anyone else from using the name within the state, but it doesn?t offer any kind of protection in the other 49 states.

What does this mean? If you?ve started a business that?s physically tied to your state (for example, a boutique shop) and never plan on expanding into other states, registering your name with the state or county might be enough brand protection for you. But if you?re planning on conducting business outside your own state, or even on the Internet, you should look into trademark protection.

The Benefits of a Trademark

A trademark is a word, phrase, symbol or design (or a combination of any of these) that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others. Trademarks are managed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

There?s no legal requirement for you to register a trademark. Using a business name can give you ?common law? rights, even without formally registering it. However, as expected, trademark law is quite complex. Simply registering a DBA in your state doesn?t automatically grant you common law rights; in order to claim first use, the name has to be ?trademarkable? and in use in commerce.

By registering for U.S. Federal Trademark protection, you?ll be eligible for several benefits, including: treble damages in some cases of infringement, the right to use the ? in your trademark, and a streamlined process for securing your domains and usernames at social sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Trademarks registered with the USPTO enjoy significantly stronger protection than ?common law? (unregistered) marks. This can make it significantly easier to recover your property.? For example, if someone happens to be using your company name as their Twitter handle. Additionally, trademarks have value and can be sold as corporate assets.

How to Register a Trademark

To register a trademark, you?ll need to file an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It?s approximately $325 (for online filing) per class that your mark falls under and the process can take anywhere from 6-12 months once you submit your application.

Before submitting an application, you should perform a trademark search first to make sure your proposed mark is available. This should include a free online trademark search to check availability. If that preliminary search shows the mark is available, follow up with a comprehensive trademark search that scours local databases, common law, and county registrars. Here?s why a comprehensive search is prudent. If your name turns out not to be available, your application will be rejected right away ? meaning you?ll lose your application fee, not to mention all the time invested in the application.

If you have already incorporated or formed an LLC for your business, you should register your trademark under the umbrella of the corporation or LLC. And if you are considering incorporating or forming an LLC but haven?t gotten around to it yet, you should do so before registering any trademarks.

While the process of registering a trademark is more involved than registering a DBA, rights to your name will be enforced by both federal and state governments. And registering a trademark can save you a ton in legal fees down the road.

Paltrow says ex cheated on her 'all the time'

Terry Richardson/Harper's Bazaar

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, actress Gwyneth Paltrow reveals that one former boyfriend did her wrong -- repeatedly.

By Us Weekly

Who did Gwyneth wrong?

In the March issue of Harper's Bazaar, cover star Gwyneth Paltrow looks back on her love life before she married Coldplay's Chris Martin and had kids Apple, 7, and Moses, 5.

PHOTOS: Gwyneth's most obnoxious quotes

"I had a boyfriend who used to cheat on me all the time," says the Oscar winner, 39, who dated Brad Pitt from 1994 to 1997, and Ben Affleck from 1997 to 2000. (She tells the mag she was "not happy" in her 20s, when she first became a star and dated Pitt, 48, and Affleck, 39.)

"I was quite naive," she says of being cheated on by her unnamed guy. "I knew on a cellular level, but I bought his story."

PHOTOS: Gwyneth through the years

Although she points out that she and Martin, 34, have been faithful, she says (as she has in the past), "I have friends who I love and admire who have had an affair. When I was younger, I would have said he's a terrible person or she's a terrible person. But who made these laws?"

Paltrow is also famous for her huge roster of A-list pals -- Beyonce, Madonna, Cameron Diaz -- and makes an unnamed reference to one of her mega-famous gal pals.

PHOTOS: Gwyneth's surprise BFFs

"She is an actress and in a new relationship with someone else with a big career," Paltrow teases "And I said 'This may not be feminist, but you have to compromise. It's been all about you and you're a big deal. And if you want what you're saying you want?a family?you have to be a wife, and that is part of the equation. Gloria Steinem may string me up by my toes, but all I can do is my best, and I can do only what works for me and my family."

Fort Lauderdale Features Cruising, Beaches, Arts and Entertainment ...

On recent trip to Fort Lauderdale a friend and I were actually impressed with how the city has grown up. When we were younger we utilized to come down here for Spring Break and really enjoyed the area an area that is now very cultural but still fun.

We?ve constantly liked the Fort Lauderdale location simply because its tropical climate makes it warm in summer and the winters are so mild that many of our pals from up north come down for a visit too. The Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is a fantastic location for friends and family who are visiting South Florida to fly into and be conveniently picked up. One of the world?s busiest cruise departure ports, Port Everglades, is just miles away from the airport. This is convenient for the four million cruise passengers that pass through the busiest Florida cruise port each and every year to get to the ships that will take them all over the Caribbean, Europe and the rest of the world.

A wonderful day trip if you?re spending some time in the area is the Everglades National Park. The Everglades is fairly a lot a swamp that has a lot of birds and animals living in it. It is truly beautiful and a excellent place to take an air boat ride specifically if you?ve in no way been on an air boat just before.

My friend and I stayed in Fort Lauderdale and decided to go down to Las Olas Blvd to the Riverwalk location. This is the Art and Entertainment district and also where the Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located. We didn?t want to see a play or modern dance recital but we did go to the Sunrise Cinemas. This is a fantastic location to see a movie with a distinctive twist. Soon after the newest blockbuster, or Indy film, you can go relax in the beer and wine bar in the lobby and discuss what you?ve just seen, which we did with some folks whose table we asked to share, it was crowded, they had been gracious and we produced new pals.

The next day we went back to Riverwalk to catch a boat tour of the region. You see, Fort Lauderdale is recognized as the ?Venice of America? because it?s crisscrossed by 300 miles of navigable waterways. We went up and down the canals looking at all the magnificent architecture of the houses in the location and all the yachts. So to say that it?s excellent region if you enjoy the water is an understatement. If you own a yacht or any kind of boat, which several individuals here do, it is a ideal place to go sailing either on the intracoastal or, as we did, via the canals.

Every single year, normally in the fall, Fort Lauderdale has this fantastic boat show called the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. It is is the largest in water boat show in the world and shows off over three billion dollars worth of boats, yachts and super yachts as well as electronics, engines and thousands of boating accessories. The Boat Show occupies a lot more than three million square feet of space, both on land and in water, but do not be concerned they supply a network of water taxis, riverboats and bus shuttles to aid men and women get around. Possibly we?ll came back for that, it sounds like enjoyable.

The next day we decided to just relax and go to the beach. The location has 23 miles of gorgeous Fort Lauderdale beaches so we knew we?d uncover 1 we liked .These are some of the ones we visited. Deerfield Beach is a cove beach and is excellent for a calm quiet day at the beach. Then there?s Hillsboro Beach that has the Hillsboro Lighthouse. This is the perfect beach to sit on and watch all the yachts and other boats come in because it?s correct at the inlet. Pompano Beach was named for the Pompano fish found in the location, each and every year they host the Pompano Seafood festival and a Fishing Rodeo. There is a bend in the Gulf Stream here that makes this some of the warmest, clearest water in South Florida. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is one of the only places in Florida where the three-tier natural coral reef system is close sufficient to the beach for you to swim out and go snorkeling or diving which we did, it was spectacular.

Fort Lauderdale is a great place to come for a vacation or come spend a couple of days as we did. You can get pleasure from the arts, the beaches or come down for a boat show or festival shop or sightsee and appreciate some of our fabulous Florida seafood. Fort Lauderdale has several options of points to do and warm sunny weather, nearly often, to do them in.

Investing in Real Estate for profit could be rewarding. It could be a money generating investment and mastering in it could mean success to investors. Here are some ways to help you assure success in real estate investing:

Old tricks versus young bloods. It is helpful for aspiring investors to listen to the more experienced ones. You listen to their tips and advices in real estate investing. You also get references and prospected new clients from them. Yes it is good to listen to the many tips but new investors should be vigilant on which tips to follow. It is also good for new investors to try new techniques in real estate investing to break from the routine and get ahead of the pack. It is a bit risky, but when it worked it will be truly rewarding. After all, personal experience is the best teacher.

Focus on your goal. A clear vision of your goals in investing is a great driving force for success. For example, what do you expect in investing in a real estate property? Do you want to see the results of your real estate investment sooner, or are you up to a bigger gain but which requires time and effort? It can also be helpful to set short term goals at first beacuase being able to turn these goals into reality will lift your motivation for a much bigger goal. For example, set your goal to close a deal within the week even if it is just a small deal. After realization of that goal, you could now set a new goal aiming for a bigger deal.

It pays to be persistent. Real estate property are assets with slower liquidity. In some cases you will not see the result of your real estate investment as soon but over the time. So being persistent and dedicated could be rewarding when you successfully closed a deal at the right time and at the right circumstances. Many investors often have the right goals but tend to disregard this attitude and simply give in to situations that hinder success. But the persistent ones does not look at the hindrances but still focus on their goals doing whatever is possible to ensure success.

Invest, invest, invest. Do not hesitate to look for new potential projects after the other. Keep on buying and selling real estate properties to earn profit on a regular basis. Setting a goal, as mentioned above, requires you to also set the amount of money you would allocate for your investment. So, in order to keep your investment cycle running you should keep on funding your investment. But this does not mean you'll have to touch the money from your own personal account. There are loans that could help you finance your investment and keep the cycle running.

All it takes is the right attitude plus the right motivation and the right management to become successful in real estate investing.

Missing Chicago trader who resurfaced gets probation for fraud (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? A former Chicago commodities trader who disappeared in 1979 in murky circumstances and was found last year working in a Las Vegas casino was fined nearly $90,000 on Tuesday but was spared jail time for fraud, authorities said.

Arthur Gerald Jones, 73, who was arrested in July after he was discovered living under an assumed name, admitted to one count of fraud in September stemming from a driver's license application.

Jones had disappeared over three decades earlier from Highland Park, Illinois. Police believed at the time that he might have been a victim of foul play, citing gambling debts and possible links to organized crime, according to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles.

He was declared dead in 1986.

But earlier this year, Jones was found working at the Rampart Casino in an upscale Las Vegas neighborhood, a job he had held for a decade, the Nevada vehicles department said at the time of his arrest.

Jones, who had originally had been charged with four felony charges related to identify theft and fraud, will serve three years of probation on a suspended 18- to 48-month jail term, the Nevada attorney general's office said in a statement.

He was ordered to pay roughly $90,000 in fines, the bulk of that to the Social Security Administration for payments made to his family after he was declared dead. Of the total, another $11,400 will go to a man whose identity Jones stole.

After Jones resurfaced, an investigator concluded that he had "voluntarily left his family and friends in 1979, possibly fleeing the mob" to start a new life, according to an affidavit.

Jones, who once held a seat on the Chicago Board of Trade, told authorities that following a trading mistake, he had been forced to sell his seat to pay his debt, the affidavit said.

He then decided to leave his family, citing a troubled marriage, unemployment, and a desire for a "fresh start," according to the affidavit.

His former wife gave a different story, telling authorities he sold his seat to pay personal gambling debts. She said he once bet $30,000 on a basketball game and at one point took out a second mortgage to pay gambling debts, the affidavit said.

Florida highway crash report details scary scene (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? A new report on the Florida highway pileup on Sunday that killed 10 people describes a frightening scene of semi-trailer trucks driving into a cloud of smoke and fog, stopping in the road and being hit by the vehicles behind, killing some people inside.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report released on Monday, Interstate 75 already was already littered with collisions at about 4 a.m. Sunday when two semi-trailer trucks heading south drove into the smoke and fog.

Both semis stopped, one in the center lane and the other in the outside lane. Both semis were rear-ended by vehicles which, in turn, were rear-ended by other vehicles.

Three people died, including the driver and passenger of a vehicle which hit the semi in the outside lane, and the driver of the last vehicle in the center lane pile up. In all 10 people died in the crashes and at least 18 were hospitalized.

The report said the truck trailers and the other four vehicles were consumed by fire, which also melted some of the asphalt pavement.

The highway near Gainesville was reopened on Monday, more than 30 hours after the pileup.

Prior to the crashes, authorities had closed portions of the roadway due to limited visibility, but subsequently reopened it, according to Robert Gordon, a Highway Patrol spokesman.

Authorities were investigating a marsh fire in Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park on Saturday that contributed to the smoky conditions on the highway. They are seeking to determine if it was an accidental blaze or started intentionally, said Ludie Bond of the Florida Forest Service.

At least 10 of the injured victims remained hospitalized on Monday. Six of them had been admitted to Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville in critical condition.

'Fear Factory' Donkey Semen Controversy: NBC Pulls Episode (Report)

Though "Fear Factor" has seen its fair share of controversy, NBC finally deemed a stunt un-airable.

TMZ reported that what would have been the Jan. 30 episode, entitled "Hee Haw! Hee Haw!," featured contestants being asked to drink a glass of donkey semen and a glass of donkey urine. The stunt was allegedly so extreme that NBC executives decided to pull it from the schedule just the day before it was scheduled to hit living rooms nationwide, according to TMZ.

"Fear Factor" host Joe Rogan hinted at the stunt months ago in an interview with The Huffington Post when asked why he said the reality show was going to be "bigger and crazier" this season:

The biggest example, I can't tell you unfortunately because they haven't even decided whether or not they're gonna air it. It's really that crazy. I got there and they told me what we were gonna do, and I just started laughing like, 'There's no way. That's not really gonna happen. Wait, is that really gonna happen?' [Laughs] I wish I could tell you. NBC's still looking at the footage going, 'Uhhhh, can we do that?' There's gonna be a lot of people that are going to be upset -- it really is ridiculous.

According to TMZ, instead of the donkey-inspired episode in question, NBC will re-air the Jan. 2 episode of "Fear Factor."

Australia's navy told to be more visible near resource projects (Reuters)

CANBERRA (Reuters) ? Defense planners urged Australia's military on Monday to maintain a stronger presence in the country's north and northwest to guard the booming resource industry and be better placed to respond to challenges from Asia and the Indian Ocean.

An interim report of Australia's defense posture review said

a more visible military presence could counter perceptions that offshore oil and gas projects could be easy targets.

The recommendation could see more navy exercises and new amphibious assault ships off the northwest coast, home to the iron ore industry and around A$200 billion ($212 billion) worth of liquefied natural gas projects, and a stronger navy presence around the coal and gas-rich Queensland state.

"The review makes the point that there is a perception in the north and north west of Australia of a lack of visibility, which undermines the notion of the defend Australia policy," Defence Minister Stephen Smith told reporters.

Smith set up the posture review last June and will receive its final report in March. Final decisions will be made with a wider review of the nation's defense strategy to 2030.

The United States, Australia's top strategic ally, also plans to increase its Asia Pacific presence and U.S. President Barack Obama has announced plans to position 2,500 marines in a de facto base in northern Australia.

China is also expanding its military and modernizing its navy, moves that have alarmed other countries in the region, especially Taiwan and Japan, while India is building a blue-water navy to extend its strategic reach.

The Philippines is considering a U.S. proposal to deploy surveillance aircraft temporarily to enhance its ability to guard disputed areas in the South China Sea.

The posture review said that sea remained a potential flashpoint, while the risk of a major conflict on the Korean peninsula posed significant regional security challenges.

"Securing sea lines of communication and energy supplies will be a strategic driver for both competition and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region to 2030, and Australia's defense posture will need to place greater emphasis on the Indian Ocean," the review said.

TERRORIST ATTACKS

But it said the likelihood of a direct military attack on Australia remained remote and Australia's resource and energy assets were unlikely to face threats from specific states.

"The potential for terrorist attacks against oil, gas and other resource industry infrastructure in the North West is also an important consideration, but the level of vulnerability to such attacks can be exaggerated," it said.

Offshore oil and gas projects, it said, would not be easy to access.

The resource state of Western Australia has a major navy base near the capital Perth, and is home to the elite Special Air Service forces, but there are no major military bases in the state's north, facing Asia.

The review said industry had expressed concern that the current presence in northern Western Australia was not in line with the importance of the resource sector to the economy.

The region includes the Gorgon oil and gas fields, operated by Chevron, Woodside's northwest shelf oil and gas fields, the Browse basin targeted by Royal Dutch Shell and Woodside's Sunrise oil and gas fields.

The review said Pilbara region alone provided 29 percent of merchandise exports and 60 percent of exports to China.

It said Australia should consider more navy exercises in the region, including the use of army landing forces, and more simulated war games. The navy should also seek more access to commercial ports at Exmouth, Dampier, Port Hedland and Broome.

In Queensland, the report said Australia should consider basing more large ships and submarines in Brisbane to ease pressures on the main eastern fleet base in Sydney.

Australia is considering building up to 12 new long-range submarines and has committed $7.6 billion for three powerful air warfare destroyers, due in service from 2015.

Australia is also aiming to buy 100 Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, to complement the fleet of F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets, based in Queensland, New South Wales and the remote Northern Territory.
