Wii U Mandatory Firmware Bricks Consoles That Don't Finish ...

The massive 5GB firmware update that Nintendo decided to deploy on the consoles launch day - Sunday - is proving to be a disaster for Nintendo and for customers who might decided the hour or more wait for it to be applied is just too long. According to several games journalists and this GII story, shutting down the system while the update is being downloaded or stopping (resetting or powering the system down) it bricks the Wii U. In other words, it makes the console no longer work...

"Warning: don't unplug your Wii U during the 2 hour plus software update or the console stops working," said Ben Fritz of the LA Times via Twitter.

Geoff Keighley of GTTV also tweeted about the update: "The Wii U firmware update is apparently about 5 gigs," wrote Keighley. "No wonder it takes about an hour+ to download."

If you have just bought a Wii U make sure you heed the warnings of the community, because apparently there are plenty about the Wii U surfacing this morning....

Update: the 5 GB size of the firmware is being called into question by a number of other sources, and may simply have been a miscommunication by Geoff Keighley. We'll update this story as we have more information.

No. 4 Ohio State beats Washington 77-66

By PAT EATON-ROBB
Associated Press

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - Deshaun Thomas tied a career high with 31 points and led No. 4 Ohio State to a 77-66 win over Washington and the championship of the Hall of Fame Tip Off tournament on Sunday.

The 6-foot-7 junior, who also had eight rebounds, had 21 in the first half as the Buckeyes (3-0) built at 10-point lead and cruised through the second half.

Aaron Craft added 18 points for the Buckeyes, who beat Rhode Island on Saturday.

C.J. Wilcox led Washington (2-2) with 18 points and Abdul Gaddy had 15. The Huskies earned the right to play Ohio State with an overtime win Saturday night over Seton Hall.

This is the same tournament that Kentucky won last season in an early test for that young team, which won the national title.

Ohio State led by double digits much of the way and by as many as 17 in the second half. Washington made one run, cutting the lead to 57-50 on a layup by Gaddy midway through the second half, before the Buckeyes stretched it back out.

Thomas scored 11 of his team's first 13 points, showing off his versatility by hitting a 3-pointer, two jumpers, a layup and a hook shot. He hit his first nine shots.

This was his 14th game with 20 or more points at Ohio State. He also scored 31 last season against Loyola (Maryland).

The 6-foot-7 junior was 3 of 7 from 3-point range, and came into the game having made seven of his 15 3-point shots. He had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the Buckeyes' win Saturday over Rhode Island.

Washington stayed in the game in the first half by shooting 52 percent from the floor, led by Scott Suggs who had eight of his 11 at intermission. But the Huskies were outrebounded 34-28 and had 13 turnovers.

These were Ohio State's first games away from home, and first on a neutral court.

The Buckeyes had been scheduled to play on Nov. 9 in the Carrier Classic on the USS Yorktown in South Carolina, but that game had to be cancelled because of condensation on the court.

So the Buckeyes had played just once, a 22-point home win in the opening game of this tournament over Albany before beating Rhode Island by 11 on Saturday.

The Huskies lost by a point to that same Albany team. Washington led by as many as 18 against Seton Hall on Saturday, but were forced to overtime before winning.

Washington's last win against a top-10 team came in the 2010 NCAA tournament, when the Huskies beat No. 8 New Mexico.

Ohio State improved to 4-8 all-time against Washington, a team it hadn't played since 1972.

The Huskies came into the weekend having lost six games in a row to nonconference opponents on the road. The Huskies were 0-5 on the road against nonleague teams last season.

The game was played at a half-empty Mohegan Sun arena, which is on the grounds of a resort casino and home to the WNBA's Connecticut Sun.

Washington will be back in Connecticut next month, taking on No. 23 UConn in Hartford on Dec. 29.

Can multiple people buy a home together as an investment - Zillow

Yes, three people can? purchase a home together.?? Lenders don't like to lend to LLCs, especially ones that have only been formed (i.e. have no financial track record).??? Therefore, the loan may be need to be in your names.

Forming an LLC with an attorney is useful to work through all the steps of responsibilities, expectations, disbanding etc.

A little sneak attack from our December 2012 cover artist, Conor Harrington, as he painted a new mural in Mexico City without the fanfare of festival or exhibition. While on vacation, the London-based artist took a day to leave something in the DF. As our colleagues at Juxtapoz Latin America said, "We hope to see you soon back in Latin lands, Mr. Harrington."

How to fast forward rewind my media player in C# silverlight windows mobile 7 app?

What I am making I am making a C# Silverlight Windows Mobile 7.5 Media player and I am using Medialibrary class. It is a simple media player and all it does is plays audio files(not video yet) stored on the phone in the zune library.

The Problem Other things are going well but now I am stuck. There seems to be no way to provide a user with a Fast Forward / Rewind button. I can go to next track but the only way to fast forward, rewind or scrub through the song is to press the volume keys and a menu comes up which is windows phone's own built in menu.

What I tried so far I looked at audiobackgroundservice but that seems to be only for streaming media and can only access isolated storage and cant even access zune songs library.

Blaming Gates as always This is such a simple thing, i cannot believe microsoft didnt provide the functionality to scrub through a song or fast forwarding/rewinding with code???????

Thanks

Stephen Colbert gets his own wax dummy at DC Madame Tussaud's museum

WASHINGTON - Stephen Colbert will take his place among the presidents at the Madame Tussauds wax museum in Washington and will be featured in a new media gallery.

Colbert is expected to visit the museum Friday to unveil a new wax figure created to represent him. The museum says Colbert donated his own clothes to dress the figure in a suit, tie, cuff links and lapel pin.

The new figure will be the centerpiece of a new media gallery with a replica of "The Colbert Report" set where guests can sit next to Colbert's figure behind his fake news desk.

Designers from Madame Tussauds went to Colbert's New York studio in June to take more than 250 measurements and photographs of the Comedy Central star to create the wax figure.

Antenna-on-a-chip rips the light fantastic

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? A device that looks like a tiny washboard may clean the clocks of current commercial products used to manipulate infrared light.

New research by the Rice University lab of Qianfan Xu has produced a micron-scale spatial light modulator (SLM) like those used in sensing and imaging devices, but with the potential to run orders of magnitude faster. Unlike other devices in two-dimensional semiconducting chips, the Rice chips work in three-dimensional "free space."

Xu and his Rice colleagues detailed their antenna-on-a-chip for light modulation this week in Nature's open-access, online journal Scientific Reports.

The manipulation of light has become central to the information economy. Think about light-reflecting compact discs and their video variants and all the ways lasers are used, from sensing to security to surgery. Light carries data through optical fibers for telecommunications and signals on the molecular scale as photonics techniques improve. Light-emitting diodes power television displays (for viewers clutching infrared remotes) and are beginning to replace the inefficient light bulbs in homes.

But in the computer space, light has been bound and gagged by two-dimensional circuitry, tied to waveguides that move it from here to there, Xu said. He and his colleagues point out in the new paper that 2-D systems fail to take advantage of "the massive multiplexing capability of optics" made possible by the fact that "multiple light beams can propagate in the same space without affecting each other."

The researchers see great potential for free-space SLMs in imaging, display, holographic, measurement and remote sensing applications.

Simply put, the Rice team's microscopic SLM chips are nanoscale ribs of crystalline silicon that form a cavity sitting between positively and negatively doped silicon slabs connected to metallic electrodes. The positions of the ribs are subject to nanometer-scale "perturbations" and tune the resonating cavity to couple with incident light outside. That coupling pulls incident light into the cavity. Only infrared light passes through silicon, but once captured by the SLM, it can be manipulated as it passes through the chip to the other side. The electric field between the electrodes turns the transmission on and off at very high speeds.

Individual SLMs are analogous to pixels, and Xu, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, sees the possibility of manufacturing chips that contain millions of them.

In conventional integrated photonics, "You have an array of pixels and you can change the transmission of each pixel at a very high speed," he said. "When you put that in the path of an optical beam, you can change either the intensity or the phase of the light that comes out the other side.

"LED screens are spatial light modulators; so are micromirror arrays in projectors, in which the mirrors rotate," he said. "Each pixel changes the intensity of light, and you see an image. So an SLM is one of the basic elements of optical systems, but their switching speed is limited; some can get down to microseconds, which is okay for displays and projection.

"But if you really want to do information processing, if you want to put data on each pixel, then that speed is not good enough." Xu said the Rice team's device "can potentially modulate a signal at more than 10 gigabits per second.

"What we show here is very different from what people have been doing," he said. "With this device, we can make very large arrays with high yield. Our device is based on silicon and can be fabricated in a commercial CMOS factory, and it can run at very high speed. We think this can basically scale up the capability of optical information processing systems by an order of several magnitudes."

As an example, he suggested the device could give the single-pixel camera in development at Rice -- which at the beginning took eight hours to process an image -- the ability to handle real-time video.

"Or you could have an array of a million pixels, and essentially have a million channels of data throughput in your system, with all this signal processing in parallel," he said. "If each pixel only runs at kilohertz speeds, you don't get much of an advantage compared with microelectronic systems. But if each pixel is working at the gigahertz level, it's a different story."

Though Xu's antennas would not be suitable for general computing, he said, they could be capable of optical processing tasks that are comparable in power to supercomputers. "Optical information processing is not very hot," he admitted. "It's not fast-developing right now like plasmonics, nanophotonics, those areas. But I hope our device can put some excitement back into that field."
