HP Announces Glass-Backed Envy 14 Spectre

hp-envy-14HP has upped the ultrabook ante with a glass-backed HP laptop that looks a bit like a MacBook and a lot like the future of HP trade dress. The HD screen displays 1600x900 pixels and includes HDMI out, Ethernet, USB 3.0, and mini Displayport ports. The glass on the back of the laptop is Gorilla Glass, which means it probably won't break if you drop it. It includes a fat 128GB SSD drive for $1,400 and an optional 256GB upgrade. It runs a Core i5 or i7 processor and ships in February.

Turkey's custody laws draw flak after general held (Reuters)

ISTANBUL (Reuters) ? A day after the jailing of Turkey's former military chief, pending possible trial on accusations he tried to overthrow the government, newspaper columnists criticized the authorities for failing to reform sweeping pre-trial custody laws.

An Istanbul court sent shockwaves through Turkey by sending General Ilker Basbug to Silivri prison, west of Istanbul, on Friday. The prosecution has yet to lay formal charges against the man who was chief of staff from 2008 to 2010.

While pro-government newspapers hailed the decision as a triumph for democracy, demonstrating no one was above the law, other commentators said his imprisonment highlighted a need for legal reform to rein in powers to arrest and detain.

Mustafa Aykol, a writer often cited as sympathetic to the ruling AK Party, said the penal code referring to "helping a terrorist organization" risked being used to criminalize an ideology.

"Turkey's arresting machine, as it has always done, can easily put suspects in prison for years, for accusations that sometimes look very overblown," he wrote in the Hurriyet Daily News in a commentary headlined "Turkey's arresting machine gone mad."

Basbug is accused of involvement in the spread of negative propaganda on websites against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government, which swept to power in 2002 and won a third term last June with 50 percent of the vote.

Tensions between the staunchly secularist military and the Islamist-rooted AK Party are long-held, though the party shuns the Islamist label and calls itself socially conservative.

Some 58 serving and 81 retired generals and admirals are in custody, suspected of involvement in plots against Erdogan's government.

Basbug is also accused of having ties with an ultra-nationalist network dubbed "Ergenekon," that police said they discovered in 2007.

Mehmet Ali Birand, one of Turkey's leading columnists, said the case against Basbug was implausible and his jailing provided further evidence of an unjust system.

"We shall never break this vicious cycle unless the disgraceful practice of arresting, pending trial, comes to an end, he wrote in Hurriyet.

"The parties responsible for this freak show are none other than political authorities who just don't want to fix the situation."

GOVERNMENT LOOKING AT LAWS

Some critics say the government has used the probe to silence opposition and cow the military.

The government denies any such a motive but Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said Friday that the government had taken note of the criticism.

Hundreds of people, including retired and serving military officers, journalists, academics and lawyers, have been detained since 2007 under the widening Ergenekon investigation. Many have yet to face trial.

Atalay said new regulations governing custody orders and arrests may be introduced along with measures to speed up the judicial process.

Basbug's lawyer is expected to appeal in the coming days against the court's order that the general be remanded in custody while the prosecution builds its case.

Some observers point out that Basbug is hardly a flight risk given he is well known, nor could he interfere with the investigation - one reason for remanding suspects in custody - as the probe goes back to 2008.

In the past the military, which overthrew four governments between 1960 and 1997, could count on support from senior judges until Erdogan introduced reforms in 2010 that changed the way judges were selected.

Ahmet Altan, the editor of Taraf, regarded as an anti-military newspaper that has broken many of the Ergenekon stories, suspected the ruling party had its own motives in being reluctant to reform legal processes.

"The AK Party has the opportunity and power to change this country, to set up a new system, and the reason why it's not doing so is because it enjoys the amazing power offered by the darkness."

Cobra bringing more Android-related accessories into vehicles at CES

Cobra Tag

Cobra Electronics, probably best known for its radar detectors and vehicle security systems, is bringing a couple new pieces of Android kit to CES next week in Las Vegas.

Android Central @ CESFirst up is the Cobra Tag G5. It's an improvement on what you see above -- a "smart" key fob with companion app that connects to your phone via Bluetooth. If they get too far away from each other, an alarm sounds. It uses the new Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (BLE) standard for an expected life of at least six months when connected to a phone. (Ed note: Whoa.)

And then there's the Cobra JoyRide for Android. It pairs up Cobra's charging accessory and is basically a car mode app. It'll initiate phone calls or voice commands, share road hazard information and live police info, serve as a music app and launch other applications.

We'll be on the ground in Las Vegas to check it all out. See our complete CES coverage here.

(AP) ? Lily, her firstborn, was her "angel," her "life." Sarah was her "little whippersnapper, loved and lovable and full of love." While her twin, Grace, "fearless," often asked her mother if she was going to die before her.

Madonna Badger told her daughter it was "never going to happen."

"But it did, and I wonder why," she said during a eulogy to her "girl tribe" in New York City on Thursday. "Why my children?"

The three young girls died along with Badger's parents during a Christmas morning fire at their Connecticut home. More than 500 mourners joined the grieving mother at St. Thomas Church in Manhattan for a somber funeral.

"My girls are in my heart," Badger said. "They're right here. And that's where they live now."

Badger broke down several times as she described each girl in turn ? Lily, 9, and 7-year-old twins Sarah and Grace ? then wailed as she followed their coffins out of the cavernous Gothic church. She was accompanied by her estranged husband, Matthew Badger, and her friend and contractor, Michael Borcina.

Borcina was with Madonna Badger and her family when the lethal fire ripped apart their lives. He walked behind the grieving parents as the coffins were brought out of the church.

Badger's parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, also died in the fire.

Badger told mourners, "In all the incomprehensible loss and chaos, all I can hang onto is that love is everything."

The pallbearers were 18 firefighters from Stamford, Conn., who responded to the fire. Among the people attending the service were fashion designers Calvin Klein and Vera Wang, rocker Lou Reed and actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Madonna Badger is a fashion advertising executive who worked on Calvin Klein campaigns.

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia also attended the service at a century-old Episcopal church.

Three blonde girls wearing pretty dresses laughed delightedly in a photo that adorned the program for the service.

Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright performed a haunting a cappella version of "Over the Rainbow" during the service, which also featured hymns sung by St. Thomas' all-male choir.

A private service was held later at Woodlawn Cemetery for the girls and their grandparents.

Authorities have told The Associated Press that embers in a bag of discarded ashes started the blaze. They had been taken out of a fireplace so the children wouldn't worry about Santa coming down the chimney.

Madonna Badger and Borcina were treated at a hospital.

Fire officials have said Borcina is believed to have placed the ashes in or outside an entryway, near the trash.

The victims died of smoke inhalation. Grandfather Lomer Johnson also suffered a blunt head and neck trauma, which resulted from a fall or being hit by an object.

One of the girls, found dead just inside a window, had been placed on a pile of books, apparently so Johnson could reach in and grab her after he jumped out. Instead, authorities say, he fell through the roof.

Stamford police are helping fire officials investigate the blaze. Police said Monday officials want to know whether there were smoke alarms, the status of renovation work on the house and whether the contractor had permits.

The issue of permits could figure in the investigation because the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has said that neither Borcina nor his company, Tiberias Construction Inc., was registered to perform home improvement work in Connecticut.

Contractors are required to register with the state, though numerous building and other permits are issued by local officials.

The agency said it did not yet have enough information about what work may have been done or completed and would not comment on whether it will investigate.

Facebook messages have been left for Borcina. Repeated attempts to contact him since the fire have been unsuccessful. He attended the service but did not speak to reporters.

Stamford authorities deemed the house unsafe following the fire and ordered it torn down the day after.

Fire Chief Antonio Conte said the fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people.

Rick Perry Would Re-Deploy Troops To Iraq To Prevent Iran Moving In "At The Speed of Light"

If the candidates were wearing the logos of their sponsors, I imagine Rick Perry would have Exxon-Mobil's emblazoned in the place where he currently wears his flag pin. Or Amoco, or whoever it is that funds his campaign when it's clearly gone past its prime.

Perry wasn't given a lot of debate time, so it would appear he memorized a few key paragraphs to make sure he got a sound bite or two. Unfortunately for Governor Perry, ending the Iraq war is something 75% of Americans support, regardless of party affiliation. That's overwhelming, which is why it's shocking to have actually heard him say he would re-deploy troops to Iraq, and to claim the war in Iraq ended because of the President's "lefty liberal base", a perjorative term that he spat out in the middle of his speech. Here's what he said:

PERRY: Well, I think that you have to -- I would send troops back into Iraq, because I will tell you...

STEPHANOPOULOS: Now?

PERRY: I -- I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there. The idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country, with all of the treasure, both in blood and money, that we have spent in Iraq, because this president wants to kowtow to his liberal, leftist base and move out those men and women. He could have renegotiated that timeframe.

I think it is a huge error for us. We?re going to see Iran, in my opinion, move back in at literally the speed of light. They?re going to move back in, and all of the work that we?ve done, every young man that has lost his life in that country will have been for nothing because we?ve got a president that does not understand what?s going on in that region.

Perry clearly speaks for the 25% of Americans who are either clueless, greedy, or bloodthirsty. I'm not sure which. It's classic neocon framing, though, particularly the part about "treasure, both in blood and money," as if lives were equal to money. Perhaps it's too simplistic to say so, given the neocon belief that US-style democracy should dominate political systems worldwide, but can we just be honest and say it's about the oil? I somehow doubt Rick Perry cares as much about lives as he does about treasure, and clearly he's upset that we aren't putting our greedy little hands on the treasure.

By the way, it wasn't just Rick Perry saber-rattling over Iran. Newt Gingrich agreed, though he wouldn't re-deploy to Iraq. He'd just send troops straight on into Iran, though not at the "speed of light." And of course, for the same reasons as Perry:

Here?s the key thing to remember. If you?re -- if you?re worried about the Iranians in Iraq, develop a strategy to replace the Iranian dictatorship and Iraq will be fine. If you want to stop Wahhabism, get an American energy policy so no American president ever again bows to a Saudi king, and then you can put pressure on the Saudis, because you have enough American energy. Stop...

The comment about bowing is a not-so-veiled effort to slam our current President for actually respecting other countries' protocols. But again, Newt Gingrich focuses on energy policy and regime change, as if it's our responsibility (and right) to do so.

Surprisingly, Ron Paul didn't just jump all over them and outright condemn the warmongering. I saw that as a golden opportunity for him, but he sort of hedged and danced around it:

But today, the -- the American Navy picked up a bunch of fishermen, Iranian fishermen, that had been held by -- by the pirates, and released them. And they were so welcome, it was just a wonderful thing to happen. This is the kind of stuff we should deal with, not putting on sanctions. Sanctions themselves are -- always leads up to war. And that?s what we?re doing.

Eastern Europe is going to be destabilized if they don?t have this [Iranian] oil. And this just pushes Iran right into the hands of the Chinese. So our policy may be well intended, but it has a lot of downside, a lot of unintended consequences, and, unfortunately, blowback.

Mitt Romney does what Mitt Romney always does, which is to avoid the question entirely and turn it into a bashfest of our current President. He's not really even worth the quote because he really never answered the direct question. But Rick Santorum is on the record as being hungry for war with Iran. Here is his response:

The Iranian people love America because we stand up for the truth and say -- and call evil, which is what Ahmadinejad and the mullahs are, we call evil what it is. That?s why they admire us, because we tell the truth.

Now we just have to have a president that helps them to do what is necessary, which is to turn that regime out.

So of the five candidates on stage, one would re-deploy troops immediately to Iraq, and two clearly support regime change. The front-runner won't give a straight answer so we don't know what he thinks, and the one anti-war candidate on the stage spoke against sanctions but wouldn't come down hard on regime change.

Does anyone think any of these men should be given the code to our own nuclear weapons (which I wish we'd get rid of sooner rather than later)?

This exchange wins my prize for the most shocking and depressing moment of the ABC New Hampshire debate. They are shameless, arrogant men, who aren't content to meddle in the lives of citizens, particularly female and gay citizens, but have no problem publicly admitting a hankering to meddle in the lives of other countries with sovereign governments.

Lies and greed, moving at the speed of light.

Grads, these majors will likely land you a job

Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce

By Allison Linn

?

Hey college students, do you want a job? Then you may not want to study architecture or the arts.

A new analysis of government data finds that recent college graduates with degrees in fields such as health and education have much lower unemployment rates than those who earned degrees in architecture and the arts.

Georgetown University?s Center on Education and the Workforce crunched government data from 2009 and 2010 to find out which majors are the most likely to land you a job right out of college.

In general, the researchers found that people are much more likely to get a job out of college when they choose a major that puts you on a specific career path, such as business. By contrast, people who get more general degrees in things like humanities and liberal arts may find it tougher to land a job, especially given the current job market.

?Your degree matters less and your major matters more,? said Anthony Carnevale, the Georgetown center?s director.

That?s a change from past thinking, when conventional wisdom held that just getting a college degree would be enough to set you on a lucrative career path.

Still, even some very specialized degrees don?t guarantee a good job. Saying you?re an architect may impress people (or at least George Costanza always thought so), but Carnevale said it?s long been a very competitive field.

?It?s like being a chef,? he said. ?You may end up being a cook instead of a chef.?

The recent slump in construction has made the job market for architects even worse, and that could last for years. The unemployment rate for recent architecture grads was 13.9 percent, according to the report.

The findings also show that there continues to be strong demand for people with degrees in engineering, math and some computer science fields.

Still, the overall unemployment rate for people with computer and mathematics degrees was a little high, at 8.2 percent. Carnevale said that?s because there are a growing number of less technical computer information specialists degrees, and hiring in those fields slows down in recessionary periods.

The unemployment rate for education grads also was particularly low, at 5.4 percent. Although there have been cuts in education in recent years, Carnevale said it?s continued to be a good bet for jobs because there are lots of older teachers who are retiring.

The good news for all college grads, regardless of major: As time goes on, unemployment rates generally go down.

?The truth is, if you get a four-year degree ? you?ll do OK,? Carnevale said. ?It?ll be worth some money.?

Tip of the hat to The Chronicle of Higher Education, which first reported this story.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 to be shown at official CES 2012 event, BB 10 OS coming at MWC

Whoa, look what just showed up in our inbox! Research in Motion, of all outfits, ain't waiting until Mobile World Congress to generate itself some positive buzz, with the company announcing that it'll be holding "an intimate event" in Las Vegas on January 10th. Topics of conversation? For one, PlayBook OS 2.0 will be on-hand, and given that we'd heard it was delayed until February, one can only hope that it's launch has been accelerated. There's also BlackBerry 7 OS, which we suspect will generate roughly as many snores as it has the past eight months. Whatever the case, you can bet we'll be there bringing you the deets.

Update: In related news, Pocket-lint has confirmed that BlackBerry OS 10 will see a proper launch at Mobile World Congress next month. Anyone care to ask Mr. Eldar if that's soon enough?
