Summerfeast 2011

When Toronto introduced Summerlicious (then Winterlicious) back in 2003, even non-foodies got excited and the result was a major p.r. success in terms of consumers attracted. That said, the bloom has gone from that rose for many of us. These events more often than not prove the adage that you get what you pay for. In this case, restricted and dumbed-down menu choices, indifferent or poor service, and the sense you?re viewed as a number, not a valued individual customer. Yes, mediocre service can be partly blamed on those customers who drink only water and leave lousy tips, but those of us who do neither of those things shouldn?t have to suffer for their misdeeds.

Happily, we can report that the value of the original concept has been retained outside the city. Seeing the response in the GTA, some tourist-friendly rural areas of Ontario have boarded the bandwagon, hosting similar events with slightly different names. This scribe has attended programs in Prince Edward County and the Hills of Headwaters, with pleasing results.

Outside the big smog, you?ll discover small-town customer service and hospitality that makes a nice change from the hipster haughtiness of so many T.O. bo?tes, while the oft-scenic rural settings just seem to make food taste better. Participating restaurants in these food fests may not be threatening to grab a Michelin star, but you?re liable to be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food offered. Rural eating no longer just means pie ? shepherd?s or apple. Chefs have begun to realize the potential of and demand for locally-sourced edibles and are integrating them into their menus in pleasing ways.

Check this out for yourself by exploring SummerFeast 2011. Sponsored by the Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association, it features 11 participating restaurants and runs from August 16 to September 4. For participating restaurants? full menus and contact details, go to?www.thehillsofheadwaters.com. The approach is identical to that of Summerlicious in that these restaurants offer a dinner and, in many cases, a lunch menu at prix fixe rates. Pricings generally parallel those of Toronto restaurants, with rates of $15 or $20 for lunch, $25 or $35 for dinner. Advance reservations are required for SummerFeast. These can be made by calling 519.941.8111 or 1.800.383.3976.

The Hills of Headwaters is a somewhat amorphous name for a region that encompasses the communities of Caledon, Erin, Orangeville and Dufferin County. It takes its title from the fact that the region is the birthplace of four major river systems, the Nottawasaga, the Credit, the Humber, and the Grand. The area features rolling hills and prime horse-rearing terrain; it includes portions of the scenic Niagara Escarpment and borders the Oak Ridges Moraine. The drive northwest from Toronto (Highway 401 west, to hwy 10 north) takes under an hour.

We suggest you make a real day of it. Take a leisurely drive on the sideroads, drop in somewhere for lunch, do some rural exploration, then choose a different locale for dinner. If you?re a golf nut, work up an appetite with 18 holes at the Caledon Country Club. They?re participating in SummerFeast, and they offer fare a distinct cut above the hot dogs and wings standard at many clubs.

The club celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and it is a fully public facility (yours truly has happily hacked his way around a few times). They offer a lunch and dinner SummerFeast menu. Tempting choices at lunch ($20) include tagliatelle, braised short rib ragout with Grana Padano or the asparagus and leek frittata, while dinner ($35) options include an appetiser of baby arugula with sundried blueberries in an ice wine vinaigrette, a main of bacon wrapped medallions of pork tenderloin, with apple butter and cornbread croutons, and a rhubarb cr?me brul?e to finish.

The Millcroft Inn & Spa is definitely one of the region?s best-known destinations. Maybe you?ve been to a wedding there? It boasts a 130-year history and a genuinely pretty vista that overlooks the Credit River Falls. Word is that under Chef Jill St. Amour it has upgraded its culinary component. The international cuisine offered in the timbered dining room can be sampled at SummerFeast at both lunch ($20) and dinner ($35). At lunch, it may be a tough call between the pan-seared arctic char with preserve lemon and micro greens from Caledon Farms or the organic grain-fed chicken with grape and brie risotto and Deerfield wilted greens. Deerfield greens accompany artisan Ontario goat cheese, macerated strawberries and pepper vinaigrette in a tempting dinner starter, while the grilled Ontario lamb sirloin, confit potato medallions and chimichurri sauce would likely be our chosen main course. Note that lunch (12 to 2.30 p.m.) is served Monday through Saturday, while dinner (6 to 9 p.m.) is served Sunday to Friday only.

Toronto foodies (and City Bites magazine) have gotten excited about recent changes on the food front at Hockley Valley Resort. Under the guidance of president/general manager John Paul Adamo, the resort now features three restaurants, Babbo, Restaurant 85, and Tavola. Restaurant 85 is a SummerFeast participant, and their $35 dinner menu (described as Mediterranean-influenced dishes inspired by locally grown ingredients) shows real promise. The fresh garden salad?appetizer?features heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers and root vegetables in extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice, while baked organic chicken (from Beretta Farms) is sided with roasted garlic potatoes and Hockley Garden vegetables. Suggested wine pairings come in 3 and 5 oz. servings.

Bistro Riviere may have a name un peu pretentious for rural Ontario, but it has an attractive location on the main street of Erin. It is next to Holtom?s Bakery, a stop we can wholeheartedly recommend. The Bistro?s starter of Bartlett Pear and Stilton salad with pecans over baby arugula sounds tasty, as does a main course of pan-seared beef tenderloin topped with goat cheese and roasted tomatoes, served with Yukon frites and seasonal vegetables. For dessert, there?s sugar-dusted chocolate-and-banana filled wontons, which sounds like a sweetly wanton treat. Dinner only here ($35).

Village Bistro is a family-run restaurant located in Caledon Village. It offers Mediterranean and Italian dishes on its $35 dinner menu. Fungi fanatics will want to start with the wild mushroom risotto, featuring oyster, shiitake, portobello and porcini (what, no magic?), with mascarpone cream. For a local main, go for the Ontario farm-raised leg of venison with port wine au jus, or, if you?re geographically incorrect, there?s the Chilean seabass baked with a pistachio crust.

One of ?downtown? Orangeville?s leading dinner destinations is The White Truffle Restaurant. Described as offering French International cuisine, they have $20 lunch and $35 dinner menus at SummerFeast. The pan-seared wild trout looks like the best lunch option, while dinner choices include a warm Woolwich goat cheese tart?appetizer?and a pan-seared wild white fish with mini roasted potatoes as a good main bet. The suggested pairings of Ontario wines is a nice touch.

We?re a mite disappointed that former SummerFeast fave the Belfountain Inn is not participating this year. It remains a good choice for a relaxing pint if you?re driving through the always lovely Forks of the Credit area.

Still, to paraphrase another popular regional advertising slogan, SummerFeast would be well worth the drive to Erin. Bon app?tit and safe driving!

Build Free website traffic Within your Web sites

There is nothing more refreshing than getting large amounts of visitors pouring through your website(s) and doing it for FREE is only the icing on the cake! Find out there five vital steps you must take to get that traffic and acquire those all important conversion mouse clicks.by Tony Thomas

I must let you in on a few different ways to get free traffic for your web site. Marketing your web website is vastly different than marketing the ?offline,? brick-and-mortar business. Thank goodness! Together with offline marketing, you?re truly pretty restricted to the city your home is in at the least and the point out you live in at the most (unless you fly a lot or including long drives!). The Internet and it?s really ways of marketing and advertising have opened up a whole new whole world of opportunities. Not to say that traditional marketing promotion is out of date when it comes to your e-business. Flyers, business cards, word-of-mouth. All vital stuff nevertheless. It just doesn?t carry as many pounds as some of the ways to advertise your business on the Internet. You need to proceed where your world-wide customers are today and they are inside your computer. Here?s a few ways that you can start building increased traffic to your e-business. They are easy, cost-free and make a huge difference.

I love to read stuff about healthy , natural options for doing things and I also liked Numark mixtrack . In addition, i enjoyed reading suunto vector as its pretty interesting also. If you are fond of dance and bit heavy then you can try pelican cases as easiest and many effective way.

1.) Mail signatures ? Use your email trademark to your fullest advantage. Label it with not only your name, of course, but your web site(s) that you are selling from. Be imaginative. Maybe add a short a few line ad for a product or affiliate you work with as well as the link to make the conversion selling. Now, every time you send out there an email, BAM! In their encounter advertising and you needn?t have to say a word about it.

2.) Forums and message boards ? Find and participate in discussion boards that have to do with the specialized niche of your web site. You aren?t the only person that enjoys what you do high are a lot of people online discussing it. Get involved and let them get to know you, trust you and value your opinion. And, again, don?t forget to add internet site URL to your trademark. Not only will you get clicks using posters and lurkers, but the yahoo and google really eat it up. Odds are very good that if you make just a couple of posts here and there, you will see people posts listed on the search engines quickly at all.

3.) Web site Search engine optimization ? SEO = Seo. This is a big DUH really, but make sure your web site is seo?ed with content that is loaded with your keywords so you can rank very well when people search on those keywords. You want people to find you, right? Do research into just what keywords are going to be the highest standing ones for your specific specialized niche. A great tool that I me is called Search It! It does not take only ecommerce-related search tool which you (and your visitors, readers, colleagues and friends) will ever need. Keep it open in the upper corner of their monitor, for 24/7 access as well as instant info-mining of the Web. That little tools high-spot are:
Every search you could ever would like, all in one spot

* State-of-the-art searches pre-packaged

* Constantly getting refreshed

* Most popular Research Categories are (in order)?
to Keyword Brainstorming
o Keyphrase research
o Keyword Competition
to Reference Library For Articles

Find Search It! right here: http://searchit.sitesell.com/success92171.html

4.) Exchanging backlinks ? A great way of getting traffic is by trading links along with other Webmasters that are in some way associated with the subjects on your web site. You put their link on your internet site and they, in turn, return the favor. The more links for your web site that the search engines uncover, the more they see it as a very popular place and the increased your rankings will go. In addition, you?re going to be grabbing visitors who visit those other sites which are linked to you.

5.) News letters ? Offer an opt-in newsletter for your visitors that include tips, tricks, information that they can?t jump on your site, etc. Include a cost-free e-book or other things as a present if they sign up. People love obtaining free things! When you create your newsletters, include promoting and links to some of the affiliate products. Once you have people agreed to apply your newsletter, you have repeat buyers that have agreed to become solicited to. A word of forewarning: make it opt-in so that they are asking for the newsletter. Do not send them unsolicited mail. You probably know how much you hate junk mail? They do too. But if they?ve opted-in (they can also opt-out at any time), that they basically have opened the front door and invited you in. Building email lists is similar to finding a pot of gold. Do not skip this essential way of marketing your business. You might as well throw your money into the street if you do.

Worldwide map identifies important coral reefs exposed to stress

Friday, August 12, 2011

Marine researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society and other groups have created a map of the world's corals and their exposure to stress factors, including high temperatures, ultra-violet radiation, weather systems, sedimentation, as well as stress-reducing factors such as temperature variability and tidal dynamics.

The study, say the authors, will help to conserve some of the world's most important coral reefs by identifying reef systems where biodiversity is high and stress is low, ecosystems where management has the best chance of success.

The paper appears online in journal PLoS One. The authors include: Joseph M. Maina of WCS and a doctoral student at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia; Timothy R. McClanahan of WCS; Valentijn Venus of Netherlands Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation; Mebrahtu Ateweberhan of the University of Warwick; and Joshua Madin of Macquarie University.

"Coral reefs around the globe are under pressure from a variety of factors such as higher temperatures, sedimentation, and human-related activities such as fishing and coastal development," said Joseph M. Maina, WCS conservationist and lead author on the study. "The key to effectively identifying where conservation efforts are most likely to succeed is finding reefs where high biodiversity and low stress intersect."

Using a wide array of publicly available data sets from satellites and a branch of mathematics known as fuzzy logic, which can handle incomplete data on coral physiology and coral-environment interactions, the researchers grouped the world's tropical coral reef systems into clusters based on the sum of their stress exposure grades and the factors that reinforce and reduce these stresses.

The first cluster of coral regions?Southeast Asia, Micronesia, the Eastern Pacific, and the central Indian Ocean?is characterized by high radiation stress (sea surface temperature, ultra-violet radiation, and doldrums weather patterns with little wind) and few stress-reducing factors (temperature variability and tidal amplitude). The group also includes corals in coastal waters of the Middle East and Western Australia (both regions have high scores for reinforcing stress factors such as sedimentation and phytoplankton).

The second cluster? including the Caribbean, Great Barrier Reef, Central Pacific, Polynesia, and the Western Indian Ocean?contained regions with moderate to high rates of exposure as well as high rates of reducing factors, such as large tides and temperature variability.

Overall, stress factors such as surface temperature, ultra-violet radiation, and doldrums were the most significant factors, ones that ecosystem management has no control over. What is controllable is the mitigation of human impacts that reinforce radiation stress and where managers decide to locate their protected areas.

"When radiation stress and high fishing are combined, the reefs have little chance of surviving climate change disturbances because they both work against the survival of corals that are the foundation of the coral reef ecosystem," said Dr. Tim McClanahan, WCS Senior Conservationist and head of the society's coral reef research and conservation program.

The authors recommend that the study results be used to formulate management strategies that would include activities such as fishing restrictions, the management of watersheds through improved agricultural practices, and reforestation of coastal watersheds that play a role in healthy coral systems.

"The study provides marine park and ecosystem managers with a plan for spatially managing the effectiveness of conservation and sustainability," said Dr. Caleb McClennen, Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's Marine Program. "The information will help formulate more effective strategies to protect corals from climate change and lead to improved management of reef systems globally."

Italian government approves new austerity cuts (AP)

ROME ? Italy's government has approved euro45 billion ($64.12 billion) in cuts over the next two years to balance the budget by 2013 to meet demands of European Central Bank.

The Cabinet approved the measures Friday evening despite fierce resistentence from local government officials who denouced the emergency austerity measures as socially unjust.

Premer Silvio Berlusconi told a news conference that the the measures respond to requests from the ECB, which demanded a balanced budget a year earlier than anticipated as well as structural reforms to promote growth.

The Cabinet approved euro20 billion in cuts for 2012 and euro25 billion for 2013.

Blocking receptor in key hormone fires up enzyme to kill pancreatic cancer cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 10, 2011) ? Pancreatic cancer researchers at Thomas Jefferson University have shown, for the first time, that blocking a receptor of a key hormone in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) reduces cancer cell growth by activating the enzyme AMPK to inhibit fatty acid synthase, the ingredients to support cell division.

With that, a new chemopreventive agent that inhibits the angiotensin II type 2 receptor -- never before thought to play a role in tumor growth -- could be developed to help treat one of the fastest-moving cancers that has a 5-year survival rate of only 5 percent.

Hwyda Arafat, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and the co-director of the Jefferson Pancreatic, Biliary and Related Cancers Center, and her fellow researchers, including the chair of the Department of Surgery at Jefferson, Charles J. Yeo, M.D., FACS, present their findings in the August issue of Surgery.

Angiotensin II (AngII) is the principal hormone in the RAS that regulates our blood pressure and water balance; it has two receptors: type 1 and type 2. AngII is also generated actively in the pancreas and has been shown to be involved in tumor angiogenesis.

Previous studies have pointed to the hormone's type 1 receptor as the culprit in cancer cell proliferation and tumor inflammation; however, the idea that type 2 had any effect was never entertained.

By looking at pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) cells in vitro, Jefferson researchers discovered that the type 2 receptor, not just type 1, mediates the production of fatty acid synthase (FAS), which has been shown to supply the cell wall ingredients necessary for cancer cells to multiply.

FAS was previously identified as a possible oncogene in the 1980s. It is up-regulated in breast cancers and is indicator of poor prognosis, and thus believed to be a worthwhile chemopreventive target.

"AngII is not just involved in cell inflammation and angiogenesis; it's involved in tumor metabolism as well," said Dr. Arafat, a member of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. "It promotes FAS with both receptors, which makes the tumor grow."

"Blocking the type 2 receptor reduces PDA cell growth with the activation of AMPK, revealing a new mechanism by which chemoprevention can exploit," she added. "In fact, maybe combined blocking of the two receptors would be more efficient than just blocking one receptor."

AMPK, or adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, is the focus of several agents today, including ones for diabetes and related metabolic diseases. It is a master metabolic regulator for cells that is activated in times of reduced energy availability, like starvation. Activation of AMPK has been shown to improve energy homeostasis, lipid profile and blood pressure. The enzyme also activates a well-known tumor suppressor, p53.

"The main thing is activation of AMPK in tumor cells," said Dr. Arafat. "AMPK is the perfect candidate as it regulates multiple targets that both halt tumor cell division and activate programmed cell death. Although it is yet to be determined how the type 2 receptor imposes deregulation of AMPK activity, identification of the type 2 receptor as a novel target for therapy is very exciting"

Next, Dr. Arafat and fellow researchers are proposing to take this research into animal studies. They hope to target the receptors early on in the disease to better understand its prevention capabilities and also study its treatment potential. Considering pancreatic cancer is typically detected in later stages, finding better ways to treat cases that have progressed further along would be of great benefit to patients.

Bathroom Shower Door | Convenience Home Improvement

With so many designer fashions in the home, the bathroom is also designed with fashion in mind. One big part of that design is the shower door.

It?s amazing how many different kinds of shower doors there are. Most of them are made of either transparent glass or the glass that?s made with modesty in mind. Some of them are frame less. The frame less ones look as though there is no door or glass there at all. While taking a shower in that, it feels like you?re in a room that?s completely see-through. There are some now that have a cut design in them. The door can also connect with a side that is also completely glass.

A few of the new type of doors have a hinge and actually open out, just like the front door of your house. These doors can swing out to the left or to the right, depending on how your bathroom is designed. The French door actually has two handles, and each door can open out.

However, the sliding panel type doors are still popular.

The modern doors for the shower now have integrated hinge systems that can show more glass, and provide secure operation. There is also a clear drip system at the bottom to keep water in the shower and not outside of the shower room, and it maintains an all-glass look.

There are also some showers that are very small. The bi-fold door is perfect for those. There are also angle doors for the smaller showers.

Activision Says No Thanks to Facebook Gaming Because It's Already ...

Activision Says No Thanks to Facebook Gaming Because It's Already Kicking Ass In Pay-to-PlayThe CEO of Activision Publishing (that's not Bobby Kotick?he is the CEO of Activision Blizzard) pointedly said his division does not share rival Electronic Arts' interest in Facebook gaming because "Call of Duty has more players who pay-to-play online than any Facebook game." Ruh roh.

That's another bon mot offered by Eric Hirshberg at the 13th Annual Pacific Crest Global Technology Leadership Forum, where he earlier said Ridley Scott (the Blade Runner director) would be developing "exclusive episodic entertainment" for the Call of Duty community.

But back to that wording, because as a wise man once told me, "Words are but the skin of thoughts." Yes, you currently get multiplayer free with any copy of Call of Duty. At best, this reinforces what we suspect: Multiplayer drives the bus in that franchise, with singleplayer as the add-on. At worst, well, we've got Call of Duty Elite coming, and that sucker still isn't priced yet.

This isn't some off-the-cuff thing. "Our players pay more per player on average than any Facebook game." Hirshberg said. Sure, given that you start out with a $60 purchase but, still. EA is pressing the Facebook sector because it sees an opportunity to grow in the pay-to-play market. Activision, by Hirshberg's words, believes it's already dominating it.
