McCutchen, Karstens lead Pirates past Giants

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pirates showed up in San Francisco mired in a 10-game losing streak with little going right. In two weeks, they'd fallen from first place to 10 games out.

Winning two from the reigning World Series champion Giants did a lot as Pittsburgh heads off to face NL Central-leading Milwaukee in an important matchup of division rivals.

Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run homer, Jeff Karstens bounced back from his worst start of the season and the Pirates won their first series in three weeks with a 9-2 victory over the struggling Giants on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh is off Thursday before opening a weekend series with the Brewers, who have won all five previous meetings.

"We'll find out after the Friday night game, but we're going in with some confidence," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "We were able to put a foot down and win a series on the road."

Garrett Jones added an RBI single to continue his torrid August and help back Karstens (9-6), whose career-high nine strikeouts matched a season high for the team. Karstens, who ended a four-start winless stretch, gave up a season-high nine runs and nine hits in a 15-5 loss at San Diego last Friday.

"It's good for us, especially heading into Milwaukee," Karstens said.

Pablo Sandoval homered for the Giants, who began the day with a half-game lead over Arizona in the NL West. The Diamondbacks host Houston in a night game. San Francisco has led the division since June 25.

Jonathan Sanchez (4-7) walked McCutchen on four pitches and threw five straight balls to start the game. Sandoval came in from third and catcher Eli Whiteside hustled to the mound to chat with the left-hander, who was roughed up again in his second start since coming off the disabled list with biceps tendinitis. Sanchez was done after 4 1-3 innings and hasn't won since June 2 at St. Louis.

McCutchen went 1 for 1 with three walks and a hit by pitch. He stole two bases and scored four runs ? most by a Pirate in a game this year. His 16th clout of the year put Pittsburgh ahead 3-1 in the third. The Pirates have homered in four of their last five games and eight of 12.

McCutchen was hit by a pitch leading off the seventh. Brandon Wood drove in a run that inning and Matt Diaz hit two run-scoring singles. Pittsburgh's Nos. 1-5 hitters went a combined 7 for 17 with six RBIs, eight runs scored, seven walks and a hit batter. Jones is batting .389 (14 for 36) with five doubles, three homers and seven RBIs this month.

With a power show on offense of late, Bucs pitchers also have allowed 18 homers over the last nine games. Sandoval connected in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1.

The Giants have hit 19 straight solo home runs, matching the 1914 Phillies' major league mark. Their last homer to score more than one run was a two-run drive by Nate Schierholtz on July 6 against San Diego.

San Francisco finished up a disappointing 3-7 homestand with its 10th loss in 13 games. The Giants have dropped three straight series at AT&T Park for the first time since losing six consecutive home series from May 12-June 18, 2008.

"We've got a lot of baseball left," outfielder Cody Ross said. "We've got to go out and play like champions. We're not doing it. We're kind of all in a rut and it seems like we can't dig ourselves out. We've got to do something."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the front office would discuss whether to stick with Sanchez. Lefty Barry Zito had been unimpressive in the fifth starter role and went back on the disabled list Aug. 1, but he could come off when San Francisco needs that pitcher again Aug. 16 in Atlanta.

"It has me a little concerned," Bochy said of the No. 5 spot. "We need that guy to help us win a ballgame, too. We haven't had a good start there in I don't know how many now."

Pirates first baseman Derrek Lee was a late scratch from the lineup with a recurring left hand injury. Hurdle said Lee's hand was very sore after he played the two previous nights following a four-game absence with the bruised hand. Lee was hit with a pitch from Chicago's Carlos Marmol last Wednesday.

Lee is batting .278 with two home runs and three RBIs in four games since joining the Pirates in a trade from Baltimore.

NOTES: Giants RF Carlos Beltran missed his third straight game nursing a strained right hand and wrist. Schierholtz was held out with a right hip flexor. ... Zito will make another rehab outing Saturday for Triple-A Fresno then fly out to join the Giants on the road. ... San Francisco INF Miguel Tejada (lower abdominal strain) isn't quite ready to begin a rehab outing in the minors, Bochy said. Tejada will travel on the road trip. ... Pirates RHP Kevin Hart had arthroscopic cleanup surgery Tuesday performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. The team hopes to have Hart ready by spring training. ... Pirates LHP Paul Maholm (6-12, 3.54 ERA) starts Friday trying to end a string of three straight losing decisions. He is 1-5 on the road and is coming off a 13-2 loss Saturday at San Diego. ... All-Star RHP Matt Cain goes for the Giants on Friday at Florida, trying to improve to 4-1 for his career vs. the Marlins. He lost to Florida on May 24.

NATO probes Afghanistan helicopter crash (AFP)

PULI ALAM, Afghanistan (AFP) ? NATO says it is investigating Taliban claims that they shot down a helicopter killing a team of 30 American troops, many of whom were special forces, and seven Afghan commandos.

An interpreter also died when the Chinook helicopter plummeted after a firefight with insurgents during an anti-Taliban operation late Friday in Wardak province, southwest of the capital Kabul.

The crash site had been sealed off by Sunday, with reports that fighting was still going on in the area where a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) is thought to have downed the troop-carrying aircraft.

The incident was the biggest single loss of life for foreign forces since a US-led invasion of Afghanistan toppled the Taliban from power in 2001, several weeks after the September 11 attacks in the United States.

"Afghan and foreign troops are still in the area," provincial spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told AFP on Sunday.

"The area is sealed off and we have reports of sporadic fighting," he said, noting that phone coverage had been blacked out.

US media reported that the dead included members of the Navy's SEAL Team Six, the secretive unit behind the daring raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

Administration sources interviewed by AFP declined to comment on whether the dead included any Navy SEALs or Team Six members, but said the casualties did not include anyone who took part in the bin Laden raid on May 2.

A witness told AFP the helicopter went down following a raid on a Taliban commander's home.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Local and Afghan army officials said an insurgent rocket felled the helicopter, which was said to have broken into several parts after being hit.

The NATO-led ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) mission in the troubled country confirmed an investigation was under way to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

"The operation of recovery is ongoing," it said in a statement Sunday, referring to efforts to reclaim wreckage from the site.

An ISAF spokesman would not comment on what attempts were being made to recover the bodies of those killed.

The previous single biggest death toll for foreign soldiers since military operations in Afghanistan began in 2001 was in 2005, when 16 US troops died when a Taliban rocket hit their Chinook in the eastern province of Kunar.

Chinooks are widely used by coalition forces in Afghanistan for transporting large numbers of troops and supplies around the war zone. Their size and lack of speed makes them especially vulnerable to ground attacks.

US President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai reaffirmed their commitment to Afghanistan on Sunday in a telephone call, the White House said.

"President Obama received a call today from President Karzai of Afghanistan, who reiterated his condolences for the tragic loss of 30 American service-members," the White House said in a statement.

Obama "noted the extraordinary service of the Americans who gave their lives, and expressed his condolences for the Afghans who died serving by their side," it said.

Karzai and Obama then "reaffirmed their commitment to the mission in Afghanistan, which is critical to the security of both our countries."

There are currently around 140,000 foreign soldiers in Afghanistan, including about 100,000 US troops.

All international combat troops are due to leave by the end of 2014, but intense violence in recent months, including a series of assassinations in the volatile south, has raised questions about the prospects for Afghan forces.

Some foreign troop withdrawals have already begun as part of a transition that has seen local soldiers and police, whose abilities are disputed, take control of key regions this summer.

Meanwhile, two French Foreign Legion soldiers were among four NATO troops killed Sunday in two separate insurgent attacks in Afghanistan, the French presidency said.

Rethinking Economics with Riane Eisler Economics - World news and ...

According to Riane Eisler, the work of raising childern is devalued the world over. Photo: Mishimoto flickr

Unlearn economics. Forget GDPs and growth rates. Ignore financial institutions (and their crises). Rethink well-being and worth. What do you care about? What in your life holds the greatest value?

This is a good starting place for a conversation with Riane Eisler, author of the highly successful book ?The True Wealth of Nations,? amongst others. She believes it is time for a practical critique of modern economics.

Eisler?s work in the fields of economics, women?s studies and social science has attracted a lot of attention. Some list her work beside great thinkers like Smith, Marx and Hegel. The book ?Great Peacemakers? named her one of 20 subjects along with Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mother Theresa. This recognition is largely a result of her work on developing the ideas of a system of ?caring economics.? We caught up with Eisler this week to discuss just what a caring economy would look like and how it might change the way the world works.

Global Envision: What?s wrong with modern economics?

Economics is the study of value, and for decades it has been assumed that value is measured mostly by money. If I value organic vegetables, I will be willing to spend more money for them. It should follow that if the government values organic vegetables, it would support the farmers that grow them. Economists devise ways to assess these values and attach number and formulas to quantify them: net worth, salary, gross domestic product. Flip to any news channel or radio station and you will hear endless debate about these figures as they rise and fall.

Eisler ignores this chatter.

?We have been stuck on a conservation that does not get to the core of the challenges we face,? she says. If economics is to be a measure of what we value and care about, why has it ignored raising infants, supporting families and nursing the elderly or infirmed? The constructs of caring extends beyond human relations and applies to the natural environment. But under both capitalism and communism, land is seen only as a source of profit. ?An old stand of trees is only given value when it is chopped down,? Eisler says. ?And yet we need them standing to breathe.?

Economic measures have become divorced from the real values they were originally intended to quantify, Eisler argues. For her, this is no coincidence. ?Economic systems don?t evolve in a vacuum,? she says. ?They are cultural constructs.? According to Eisler, the current system evolved in an environment where nature was exploited and so-called ?women?s work? was devalued. Consider this: a women who stays at home and cooks, cleans, gardens, feeds, washes, and rears her three children for 16 hours a day contributes absolutely nothing to the GDP, a measure of a country?s standard of living. Instead, the GDP values only income. This includes the cleanup of environmental disasters, the sale of cancer causing cigarettes, war operations and weapon manufacture.

GE: If GDP is a bad measure of value, what statistics should replace it?

Eisler was ready for this question. In a recent report commissioned by Center for Partnership Studies, Eisler helped to synthesize 14 categories with 79 indicators that more accurately measure well-being, including human rights ratings, the number of premature deaths from pollution, and access to health care, as well as more traditional measures of joblessness rates and average annual earnings.

Eisler also hinted that measuring mechanisms should be secondary to the values behind them.

GE: In past economic transformations, the people with the least have been first to lose their livelihoods.

Eisler assured me this would not be the case. ?After all, the majority of poor are women and children and a major reason for this is that care-giving is given no value,? she said. To prove her point, she pointed to societies who have already taken steps to place a greater value on caring. Many Nordic countries, who always seem to score high on human development indices, provide extended paternity leave for both parents, offer universal health care, and support government-funded child support. But can low income countries afford such programs? Eisler acknowledged the challenges they would face but also reminded me of CCTs in Latin America, a government program that financially rewards mothers for taking their children to health checkups and primary school.

GE: With this week?s massive spending cuts by an austere U.S. Congress, could the transition to ?caring economics? happen here?

Eisler agrees the signs don?t look good but still remains hopeful. The way she sees it, creating an economic system that values the unpaid work of caring is an investment, not just an expenditure. In other words, the money spent now will be returned in future savings and revenues. And she has the scientific research to back her up. In her book, ?The Real Wealth of Nations,? she cites substantial evidence that private corporations have been able to realize savings and increase profits by taking care of their workers.

GE: It sounds like there?s a lot of work to be done. What?s the role for those of us without advanced degrees in economic theory?

Eisler?s answer was surprising: Everything. She believes that interdisciplinary support outside the field of economics must begin valuing the work of caring. Gender equality, civil rights, environmental responsibility, access to quality education, the right to health care, and supporting families are all areas that work towards the goal of overriding the top-down, masculine-valued economic system currently in place.

?Change doesn?t happen quickly,? Eisler reminded me. ?It can, but there are many steps that need to be taken.? Eisler is hoping to create a ground swelling grassroots movement that can champion such a transformation. Her foundation, the Center for Partnership Studies is making progress and inviting others to do the same. For example, the foundation offers an online training program where people from all over the world are able take leadership roles in the economic transformation. The next session begins this fall.

?The response to the online program has been wonderful,? Eisler said. But she also mentioned that with the size of this paradigm shift, ?We will need more people.?

Eisler will speak on ?The Power of Partnership: Towards a Caring Economics and Society? at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at Marylhurst University, just south of Portland, Ore. The event is free and open to the public. Questions above were edited for clarity.

(AP) ? A New York City woman faces charges that she sent threatening emails and videos to a website dedicated to the French actress Marion Cotillard.

FBI agents say in a court filing that Teresa Yuan sent a series of spooky messages in July that included ramblings about wanting to play Russian Roulette with the actress.

In another video she says she would feel no regret "after it happens" because "that's apparently how it feels to be a killer." On one recording, she hisses and growls at the camera.

Yuan faces a charge of interstate stalking. Her lawyer, Michael Schneider, tells The New York Daily News he wouldn't comment on the case.

Cotillard won an Oscar for her role as Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose."

Twitter Autoresponder ? Build Solid Relationships with This Tool ...

By Calvin Kaufman - Fri Aug 05, 9:21 am

The Twitter autoresponder, which has existed for some years, is a greatly under-used tool and resource which is a mistake you should not commit in your Twitter marketing. We would like to warn you about the very common practice of misusing this tool, though, because you can seriously harm your business. If you want to see how promotions using this kind of marketing can rank then check out http://www.robselaney.com/click-conspiracy/click-conspiracy-review.

When you add a link to your automatic message that you send out to your new followers, you can either direct them to the homepage of your website or you can send them to a specific landing page that introduces them to your offer. It does make a big difference as to which approach you decide to take because when you lead your new follower to a targeted landing page that is relevant to your offer, you have chances of getting a better response. Since this will be the first time new followers will see anything about you, other than your profile, you may want to focus on introductions, first. The best perspective with relationship marketing, which is what Twitter is about, is to give first in the form of solid value through your content. Twitter requires online businesses to have patience because that is the nature of developing strong business relationships.People will hopefully learn more about http://www.robselaney.com/traffic-empires/traffic-empires-review after reading this.

When you?re direct messaging someone on Twitter, you?re expected to make the most out of that opportunity to interact with that follower of yours, especially when it?s a new follower. When you talk to your followers for the first few times, or perhaps even more, never attempt to include anything that even smells of promotional activity. Take up the entire 140 character limit with new followers, and even look at their profile and comment on it in some polite manner. It?s a different thing when you?re saying thanks in public, where you can send out a batch of tweets conveying your message. We know Twitter takes some time, and this is why a lot of marketers do not want to be bothered with it.

Some people at Twitter always hide their external links because maybe they do not want people to see what the link is all about ? we think that is a bad idea. In other words, if your direct message contains a link, then make sure it leads to a new page on your website or a landing page where your followers can take action. Followers will be expecting something like a link to your site and ?not? your Twitter profile. Be intelligent when it comes to adding a link to your message, and make the most out of it.

Your can get far better results than the average online business with the Twitter DM autoresponder by using common sense business practices. If you do that while delivering excellent value and being respectful, then you will build a good foundation.

I have found these pointers to become beneficial before choosing items like Point Click Commissions.
